ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Mia Jin, a Grade 7 student at BASIS International School Hangzhou. I’m an avid reader drawn to classic literature, and I’m curious about how things work—especially in chemistry. Across my interests, the common thread is simple: I like asking questions, exploring different perspectives, and challenging myself.

Writing has led me to think more deeply about social justice and gender equality. In my essay, Half the Sky, Half the Care, I asked why women with the same health needs can receive different care. I started it after realizing that something as ordinary as getting your period can keep millions of girls out of school, out of work, and out of treatment. The essay won First Prize in the Fall 2025 Social Justice Awards.

I also take part in public speaking and debate. I placed second in my division at the NHSDLC Fall 2025 Online Tournament II. While preparing for a debate on human gene-editing technologies, I studied arguments both for and against expanding access. I later represented my school at the BASIS China speech finals.

My interest in chemistry led me to study Chemistry of Medicine at the CTD–ASEEDER summer program in Shanghai, where I took part in lessons and laboratory experiments. Music is another big part of my life. I have studied the violin for six years, earning a Distinction in my ABRSM Grade 8 examination in 2025, and I have played tennis for five years.
